Ten U.P. Wrestlers Still Alive At State Tournament
AUBURN HILLS, Mich.---Twenty-nine Upper Peninsula high school wrestlers began the weekend at the MHSAA Individual state wrestling finals with hopes of winning a state championsip. None of them will win their respective weight classes, but ten U.P. wrestlers will "place" in the top eight, and can finish as high as third place on Saturday.Four U.P. wrestlers advanced to the semifinals on Friday, but they all lost their matches Friday night. In Division Three, Gladstone's Bobby Beauchamp lost his 145-pound match to Foster Karmon of Grand Rapids Catholic Central on a pin at 1:58. In Division Four, Iron Mountain's Alex Edwards lost his 130-pound match to Lamont Cannon of Highland Park, 6-4. And Norway's Taylor Bonetti lost on a major decision to Dillen Decker of Carson City Central in his semifinal match. Munising's Hunter Sadler, a former Escanaba wrestler, lost his Division Four 171-pound match to Nick Cooper of Springport, 7-2, Friday night. Beauchamp, Edwards, Bonetti, and Sadler are all guaranteed spots on the podium Saturday night, and will finish anywhere between third and eighth, depending on how they wrestle in consolation matches Saturday. All four had won their first two matches to make it to the semifinals at the Palace. Also, In Division Three, Gladstone's Jeremy Kadish (171 pounds) will place in the top eight after winning two consolation matches, including one in overtime, on Friday. In Division Four, Norway's Cole Gonzalez (140 pounds) and Tanner Gonzalez (152 pounds) are also both 2-1 and will both wrestle on Saturday in consolation "placement" matches. Iron Mountain's Corbin Henkel (135 pounds), and Rudyard's Jimmy Spencer (125 pounds) are also guaranteed spots on the podium. And St. Ignace 171-pounder James Cryderman won his consolation match on a 3-2 decision on Friday, and will also wrestle for placement on Saturday.
