U.P. High School Wrestlers Reach Palace Podium
AUBURN HILLS, Mich.---There were no Upper Peninsula state wrestling champions, but ten U.P. boys finished in the top eight of their weight classes Saturday at the MHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills. In Division Three, Gladstone's Bobby Beauchamp lost his 145-pound consolation match Saturday morning to Mason Dey of Remus Chippewa Hills, 8-5. But Beauchamp rallied to win his fifth place on a pin in 1:47 over Trevor Patterson of Chesaning. Gladstone's Jeremy Kadish settled for eighth place after losing two very close 171-pound matches on Saturday. He lost to Chesaning's Justin Sloan, 1-0, and in the seventh placve match, Kadish lost to Levi Sabin of Allegan, 4-3. In Division Four, Norway's Taylor Bonetti won his consolation match over Charlevoix's Sam Hovie, 7-3. But Bonetti settled for fourth place when he lost to Trevor Murphy of Manchester in the third place match on a 6-4 decision. Norway's Cole Gonzalez was pinned in his 140-pound consolation match by Vassar's Todd Noblin, but Gonzalez bounced back to win his seventh place match over Cameron Urban of Rogers City, 7-1. His brother Tanner Gonzalez also finished seventh in the 152-pound class when he lost to Manchester's Matt Cuevas in the consolation bracket but then beat Demetrius Gooley of Flint Beecher on an injury default early in the third period. Iron Mountain's Alex Edwards won twice on Saturday to finish third the 130-pound weight class. He beat Malachi Marshall of Lainsburg in overtime, and the Edwards captured the third place match with a 3-1 win over Springport's Sean O'Hearon. Iron Mountain teammate Corbin Henkel settled for eighth place in the 135-pound weight class. He lost both of his consolation matches on Saturday: an overtime decision to Noah Nieman of Blissfield, and a 6-5 loss to Nick Dettling of Manchester. Munising 171-pounder Hunter Sadler lost twice on Saturday and finished sixth in his weight class. Sadler lost to James Cryderman of St. Ignace, 9-3, and lost the fith place match to Matt Burtrum of Bronson. Sadler is a former Escanaba Eskymo wrestler. Cryderman, meanwhile, settled for fourth place after he beat Sadler. He lost the third place match to Alex Elasivich of Montrose, 6-2. Rudyard 125-pounder Jimmy Spencer finished sixth after losing a pair of consolation matches on Saturday. He lost to Robert Rogers of Burton-Bentley in overtime, and then fell on a major decision to Justin Bradford of Schoolcraft, 14-3.
