Escanaba EMP Midgets Eliminated In UP Playdown

This story was written by Jodi Westerberg

IRON RIVER -
The Escanaba EMP Midget BB hockey team lost all three games in last weekend's District Tournament in Iron River.

EMP lost the first game to Ontonagon 5 to 4.

Ontonagon got off to a quick start, in the first period, as Matthew Ladewig scored two goals less than a minute apart. The first goal was unassisted. The second goal was assisted by Garret Parker. Alex Jones then scored next for Ontonagon, assisted by Adam Lanctot and Ryszard Olzewski. At the end of the first period, it was Ontonagon 3-0.

Good things happen, when you play scrappy around the net, and that's exactly what happened, as Zeke Strand's goal put EMP on the board, with Aaron Young and Noah Olsen assisting. After two periods, it was Ontonagon 3, EMP 1.

EMP rallied in the third period, scoring two goals, within 20 seconds of each other, to tie up the game 3 to 3. Olsen scored, with assists coming from Christer Carne and Lucas Weinert. Young scored next, assisted by Alex Valentine and Carne. Several EMP penalties, however, helped contribute to Ontonagon's two power play goals.

Lanctot scored, assisted by Michael Turunen and Ladewig. Jones then scored his second goal of the game, unassisted. With 1:06 remaining in the game, EMP's Olsen scored, assisted by Strand, giving them an opportunity to try and tie up the game. But Ontonogan held on to their 5 to 4 lead to win the game. EMP's goalie Garrett Parlett had 42 saves in the game, while Ontonogan's goalie Tristan Lorendo had 46 saves.

EMP had 24 minutes of penalties in the game, while Ontonogan had 10 minutes of penalties.

EMP lost the second game to Calumet 7 to 4.

In the first period, Calumet's Joey Curtis scored first, assisted by Cullen Sackson-Hodges and Travis Bessner. EMP's Aaron Young tipped in a goal, from a quick-firing slap shot from defenseman Cody Vandermissen, making it 1 to 1. On their power play, Calumet's Dalton Peters scored, assisted by Curtis. After the first period, it was Calumet 2, EMP 1.

In the second period, Calumet's Sackerson-Hodges scored, assisted by Keegan Luoma. Carne then scored for EMP, assisted by Spencer Murray. Calumet's Clay Larson scored, assisted by Curtis and Luoma.

Travis Bessner added two more power play goals for Calumet, both within 20 seconds of each other. Sackerson-Hodges assisted on both goals.

Young then scored a nice back-handed goal for EMP, his second goal of the game. Weinert was in on the assist. At the end of the second period, it was Calumet 6 to 3.

In the third period, Carne scored his second goal of the game, as he chased down a pass from Vandermissen. Calumet's Travis Hughes scored, assisted by Sackson-Hodges and Luoma, both getting playmakers in the game. The final score was Calumet 7, EMP 4.

EMP's goalie Parlett had 48 saves in the game, while Calumet's goalie Kyle Archambeau had 20 saves. EMP had 22 minutes of penalties in the game, while Calumet had four.

EMP lost the third game to Iron-Range (Negaunee) 10 to 1.

In the first period, EMP's Olsen scored, as he hustled down the rink, skating by Negaunee's defenders. Weinert contributed with the assist. After the first period, it was EMP 1, Negaunee 0. That would be the only goal, however, scored by EMP, as Negaunee dominated both the second and third periods.

In the second period, Negaunee's Eric Farley scored two goals, assisted by Zachary Carter and Mitchell Barry. Luke McAuliffe scored unassisted.

Matthew Stanchina then added a goal, assisted by Jaden Mattson, giving Negaunee a 4 to 1 lead, after two periods of play.

In the third period, Negaunee's Bryant Holmgren scored, assisted by Farley. Hayden Tadgerson added two more goals, with Barry and Mattson assisting. McAuliffe scored a power play goal, unassisted. Carter scored, assisted by Farley. Blake Schaut wrapped up the scoring for Negaunee, assisted by McAuliffe.

EMP's goalie Parlett had 28 saves in the game, while Negaunee's goalie Joshua Phillips had 25 saves. EMP had 12 minutes of penalties in the game, while Negaunee had 22 minutes of penalties.

EMP has four road games scheduled next weekend. Saturday's games are in Munising at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday's games are in Iron River at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. central time.
