Shorthanded EMP Midgets Compete In St. Ignace

ST. IGNACE---The EMP Midget BB hockey team held their heads high as they skated through the line, shaking hands, with the opposing team's players, from downstate Midland, during this weekend's Battle at the Bridge Midget Showdown 2015-16 Tournament, held in St. Ignace.

They won 8 to 3 over Midland. The four game tournament, consisted of eight teams, in two divisions. EMP tied Marquette Main Street 4 to 4, and lost the other two games against St. Ignace 12 to 2, and to Livonia 15 to 3.
 
It should be noted that EMP, played two games with just 9 players, and two of their games, with 10 players. The only other team, in this tournament, that played with less than three or four lines of players, was Marquette Main Street. 
 
Christer Carne was honored by being named the Most Valuable Player from EMP's team, during the tournament.
 
In their 8 to 3 win over Midland, EMP scored the first three goals in the first period. Carne struck first for EMP, just two minutes into the game, with Noah Olsen assisting.

Olsen then scored two goals in a row, assists credited to Jake LaFave, Justin VanDrese, and Carne. Midland's Nickolas Ware, got his team on the board, assisted by Alec Ehrmantraut. LaFave then scored for EMP, assisted by Carne and Zeke Strand. At the end of the first period, it was 4 to 1 EMP over Midland.
 
In the second period, EMP, added three more goals, to their lead. EMP's Cody Vandermission, fired a solid strong shot, from just inside the blue line, scoring, unassisted. Carne scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Olsen and LaFave.

Kyle Mattson, from EMP, scored next, unassisted, with a goal, that trickled in past Midland's goalie. LaFave, added his second goal, of the game for EMP, assisted by Olsen, his third assist of the game, for the playmaker.

At the end of two periods, it was EMP, 8, Midland 1.
 
In the third period, Midland scored two more goals. Colin Marsh scored, assisted by Taylor Cook and Christopher Kerber. Michael Franz added a goal, with Kerber contributing his second assist of the game. The final score was EMP 8, Midland 3.
 
Aaron Young was EMP's goalie. No goalie stats were available from the tournament's official game reports, for any of the four games. 
 
Both teams had 6 minutes of penalties in the game.
 
In the 4 to 4 tie against Marquette's Main Street, Carne picked up a nice pass from Lucas Weinert, and cruised down the ice to score EMP's first goal, just 17 seconds, in to the first period. Marquette's Anthoney Moyle answered back, scoring, unassisted.

EMP's Olsen scored next, assisted by VanDrese and Vandermissen. Marquette's Joey Elmhurst scored, tying up the game, 2 to 2, near the end of the first period. Moyle and David Wiegand contributing with assists. 
 
In the second period, Marquette's Moyle, scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Steve Deshone. EMP's VanDrese tied it up 3 to 3, assisted by Olsen and Weinert, his second assist of the game.

Deshone scored for Marquette, assisted by Ryan Houle and Travis Christensen. EMP's LaFave tied the game up again, making it 4 to 4, with assists from VanDrese and Carne.
 
EMP tried to score, on two power play attempts, in the third period, but Marquette's goalie prevailed for them. The game ended in a 4 to 4 tie.
 
EMP's goalie, Aaron Young, did a nice job in the net. EMP had 6 minutes of penalties in the game, while Marquette had 22 minutes of penalties.
 
In the 12 to 2 loss against St. Ignace, Carne scored in the first period for EMP, assisted by VanDrese and Strand. Olsen scored in the second period, assisted by Carne and Weinert.
 
Jacob Lafave was EMP's goalie.
 
Both teams had 4 minutes of penalties in the game.
 
In the 15 to 3 loss against Livonia, EMP's Carne scored in the first period, unassisted. Olsen scored for EMP in the second period, assisted by VanDrese. Carne then scored his second goal, of the game, assisted by Vandermissen.
 
Aaron Young was EMP's goalie. EMP had 4 minutes of penalties in the game, while Livonia had 2 minutes of penalties.
 
EMP is back in CUP League action this Sunday in Calumet. Game times are Noon and 3:15 p.m.
