PLAYOFF HEARTBREAK: Menominee Tops Braves
GLADSTONE---The Gladstone Braves struggled all season long, losing every single Great Northern Conference match, and winning just two matches overall. But the young Braves have shown signs of life at various times throughout the season, and the girls nearly put it all together Tuesday night in the Class B District Semifinals against the Menominee Maroons. But when it looked like the Braves just might pull the upset, Menominee's Jen Woods stepped up and turned the match around. With Gladstone ahead two sets to one, and tied 13-13 in the fourth set, the Maroons scored eight straight points on Woods' serve to take a 21-13 lead. Menominee would win that set, 25-15, and then take the match in the fifth set, 15-8, with Woods getting two huge points, including the match-clinching service ace. The Braves battled hard, but the season came to an end with a 3-2 Menominee victory. The scores were 23-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15, and 15-8. The result means Menominee will host the district championship match Friday night against the winner of Wednesday night's Houghton-Kingsford match.
