Copper Country Teams Duke It Out In 'Rock' Final
GLADSTONE---The Houghton Gremlins beat the Hancock Bulldogs, 2-0, to win the championship of The Rock girls volleyball tournament on Saturday in Gladstone. The two teams had tied during pool play, and along with Kingsford, had the best records of the event. The tournament had nine teams this year from across the Upper Peninsula, and it was a much different format this time. Instead of simply taking the top four teams out of pool play and have semifinals and finals, this tournament had pool play, a second level of pool play, and then matches involving all of the teams before the championship was decided. Houghton beat Hancock in that final, 25-19, 25-23. Locally, Escanaba won three matches, lost two, and tied one, for a total of seven set wins. The Eskymos won two of those matches at the end of the event to win the consolation bracket. The host Gladstone Braves played five matches and tied four of them, with the other being a loss to Houghton in the final rounds. And Rapid River played five matches, losing four of them.
