Rudyard, Calumet Win Regional Semifinal Matches
GLADSTONE---The Rudyard Bulldogs and Calumet Copper Kings picked up Class C regional tournament victories Tuesday night in Gladstone. Rudyard outlasted Iron Mountain, 3-2, while Calumet rushed past Munising, 3-0. That sets up a Class C regional championship match between Calumet and Rudyard Thursday night in Gladstone. Tip-off is set for 5:30. RUDYARD 3, IRON MOUNTAIN 2---In the night's opening match, the Mountaineers got off to a great start, turning back the Bulldogs, 25-22. But in the second set, Rudyard led from start to finish, winning 25-14. The Bulldogs continued their momentum with a 25-20 win in the third game, but the Mountaineers roared back to force a deciding fiftth set by winning the fourth, 25-22. But in the fifth set, Iron Mountain made too many mistakes, including three serves into the net. That included the serve into the net on the match's final point. CALUMET 3, MUNISING 0---The Mustangs got off to a good start, leading 5-3 in the first set. But things went downhill quickly for Munising from there, with the Copper Kings scoring 21 of the next 27 points. Then, in the second set, Calumet cruised to a 25-6 win, and then put the match away with a 25-16 win in the third and final set.
