Marquette Soccer Team Picks Up First Victory, 4--1
MARQUETTE--Marquette boys varsity soccer team won its home opener Tuesday, beating Northland Pines of Eagle River Wis., 4-1. It was Marquette’s first win of the season after losing three matches last Saturday in Saginaw. “It was a more complete game then the games we played this last weekend,” Marquette Coach Dan Menze said. “I moved a few players around and it really made a big difference in the flow of the game for us. Still a work in progress but definitely a step in the right direction.“ Sophomore Nick Lindberg opened the scoring with an unassisted goal on a corner kick, then freshman Max Dawson scored to make it 2-0, on a Trevor Salmon feed. In the second half, Salmon scored two straight goals (assisted by Dawson and Lindberg, respectively), before the Eagles scored a goal to break goaltender Harrison Anthos’ shutout. He made six saves on seven shots. The game was called with two minutes to go due to lightning. Marquette (1-3) faces Iron Mountain on Thursday. |
