Escanaba, West Iron County Play To Tennis Draw
ESCANABA---The Escanaba High School girls tennis team won three of four doubles matches Friday to earn a 4-4 tie with the West Iron County Wykons in a make-up match. All of the flights were straight set wins. "As always, we had a ton of competitive tennis today," Escanaba Coach Chris Ogren said. "Great win at #2 doubles for Gracie Wickham and Abby Hill, who, after struggling early in the season, have now won three consecutive matches." The Wickham-Hill duo turned back West Iron's Kat Hemeleski and Aubey Bice, 6-4, 6-4. The #4 doubles team of Lizzy Sliva and Lily Newhouse cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over WIC's Hailee Bradshaw and Bailey Hoffart. And the #3 doubles team of Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell defeated the Wykons' Autumn Smith and Callista Bortonameolli, 6-1, 6-1. "We were missing a couple players today so our #4 doubles team had to move up and play #3," Ogren said. "They did tremendously with the move." The Wykons won the #1 doubles flight, as Tori Bociek and Madison Berutti beat Esky's Erica Moore and Madi Mishica, 6-4, 6-4. West Iron won three of the four singles matches. Livea Mazurek defeated Jacey Moreau, 6-1, 6-4, at #1 singles. At #3, Aurora Dahl topped Escanaba's Lilia Hughes, 6-4, 6-4. "Lilia normally plays #3 doubles, but was missing her partner today," Ogren said. "She played very well, and played an extremely competitive match against a very good opponent. Despite the loss, Lilia showed how much she's grown as a player." West Iron's Bryner Nodurft won at #4 singles over Escanaba's Amanda Beem, 6-1, 6-4. The Eskymos' lone singles victory was Sophia Derkos at #2 singles, 6-0, 6-2, over Kali Applin. |
