ESCANABA---The Bay College Norse women's basketball team turned in a dominating performance Tuesday night to advance to the Final Four in the NJCAA Region 12 tournament.
Bay won its quarterfinal match, 101-38, over Delta College out of Saginaw, to earn a spot in the semifinals against top-seed Lansing Friday night in Flint.
The Norse had five players score in double figures, led by Menominee's Anna Axtell with 23 points. She also had six rebounds and four assists in her 24 minutes of work. Sophomore Kennedy Sproule nailed six triples and scored 20 points, grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three more shots.
Bark River-Harris's Mackenzie Hoffmeyer scored 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, and she added three steals and four assists.
And fellow Bronco Lauren Zawada shook off early foul trouble to get a double-double of ten points and 13 rebounds. Baraga's Makenna Hendricksom chipped in 13 points
Bay raced to a 28-10 lead after the first quarter and led at halftime, 47-22.
The Norse defense really clamped down in the second half as the Pioneers struggled to score against the Bay pressure, making 32 turnovers along the way. Delta managed only 16 points in the second half, while Bay scored 54 more points.
Delta ended its season with a 10-17 overall record, and 0-3 against Bay. The Pioneers were led by Hailee Jefferson's eight points and five rebounds. Carah McCrumm had six points and six rebounds, and Amari'A Campbell chipped in six points and seven boards. Delta was just 1-of-15 from three-point territory.
Bay College improved to 20-9 overall, its second straight 20-win season after three straight losing seasons. Tuesday's win was the 117th in program history (117-97).
The Norse will advance to the regional semifinals at Mott College's Ballenger Fieldhouse on Friday, for a semifinal game against the Lansing Community College Stars (West Champions at 14-0; 25-5 overall).
The other semifinal will pit Schoolcraft College from Metro Detroit (25-5 overall) against Hocking Community College from Ohio (20-8 overall).
