Kingsford Wins U.P. Tennis Title; Eskymos Third

KINGSFORD---The Escanaba High School girls tennis team did not repeat as Upper Peninsula champions. With all of the girls the team lost to graduation, nobody really thought they would. But the girls improved throughout the season, and on Wednesday in Kingsford, the Eskymos finished a strong third behind Kingsford and Negaunee.

At #1 doubles, the Escanaba duo of Olivia Berquist and Shelby Gregoire won the championship over Kingsford's Anna Shanks and Kate Lamy, 6-1, 6-2.

At #3 doubles, Escanaba's Emily LaFave and Olivia LaForest won the U.P. title over Kingsford's Megan VanPembrook and Taylor Jacobson. The Kingsford girls won the first set, 6-4, before the Eskymos won the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3, to win the title.

Negaunee won three of the four singles championships, but Kingsford had more depth and the Flivvers won the team trophy with 18 points.
