The MHSAA Competitive Cheer District Finals were held over the weekend across the state. In Division Three, Kingsford finished second and Gladstone took fourth, so both advance to the regionals. The DeTour Red Raiders made the long trip from the eastern U.P. a successful one on Saturday as they used a big fourth quarter to beat the Escanaba Eskymos, 50-42, in Escanaba. The Gladstone High School wrestling team won its first regional championship since 2008 Wednesday night. The Braves beat Roscommon, 46-28, and then beat Grayling, 44-25, to earn a trip to next week's state finals. The Kingsford High School hockey team won its opener at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase on Friday. The Flivvers topped the Saline Hornets, 6-3, as Reid Pietila scored three goals. Meanwhile, the Marquette Redmen lost their opener to Farmington, 5-3, Thursday night. Marquette also lost to Farmington, 4-3, in Friday's game, in Trenton.
