Kingsford Tennis Rolls; Esky's Eastin/Fix Win Title
 MARQUETTE----The Kingsford Flivvers were dominant all season long in the Great Northern Conference, and the Negaunee Miners were the same in the Mid Pen. When all of the Division One teams got on the Marquette High School courts in the U.P. Finals on Wednesday, the Flivvers showed that they were by far the U.P.'s best team. Kingsford won the championship at six of the eight flights and rolled to the chanpionship with 21 points. Negaunee and Marquette finished tied for second with nine points, Menominee was fourth. Escanaba finished fifth and Gladstone was sixth. Escanaba's David Fix and Jake Eastin stopped a complete Kingsford sweep by winning the championship at #1 doubles. The Eskymo duo defeated Marquette's Kyle King and Alex Shahbazi, 6-1, 7-5, in the championship match. 
Gladstone's Aaron Parmet made the semifinals before losing on Wednesday.
Adam Szabo, Dan Harrington, and Brady Hicks all won their singles championships. And the #2, #3, and #4 doubles teams all won their finals matches in straight sets. CLICK HERE to see all of the D-1 tennis team and individual results. Gladstone did not get a boy to the finals. Aaron Parmet was able to get to the semifinals at #1 singles before losing his match. Escanaba got T.J. Myrick to the semifinals at #2 singles, and the #2 doubles team of Steve Wood and Mike Shields also made the semifinals.
"We improved throughout the year," Escanaba Coach Jim Hansen said. "When we had our entire lineup we were 5-1 (in dual meets). Unfortunately, record wise, we had numerous guys out of the lineup throughout the year."
Hansen says the kids had legitimate reasons for missing so many matches. 
Escanaba's T.J. Myrick made the semifinals before losing on Wednesday in Marquette.
"We had an awesome group of kids that really balanced many responsibilities throughout the year," he continued. "They played tennis hard and they live life the right way; working hard and taking care of others. We had a good year." Fix, Eastin, and #1 singles John Brant were all picked as First-Team All-U.P. The future of the Eskymo tennis program is in doubt, though, as the Escanaba School Board has voted to eliminate the program in 2014. |
