Kingsford, Negaunee Win Tennis Conference Titles

KINGSFORD---The Kingsford Flivvers cruised to the Great Northern Conference tennis championship Thursday in Kingsford.

Kingsford finished with 38 points, well more than Marquette's 23. West Iron County (21 points) took third, and Menominee was fourth (18).

Delta County's tennis teams were in the final two positions. Escanaba took fifth place with 14 points and Gladstone finished last with six points.

Gladstone's Aaron Parmet lost in finals.
For the Braves, Aaron Parmet made it to the finals at #1 singles, but lost to Kingsford's Caleb Harrington, 6-3, 6-0. Parmet had defeated Harrington earlier this season.

For the Eskymos, the #1 doubles team of Jake Eastin and David Fix won the GNC championship, 6-1, 6-3, over Marquette's top doubles team. Escanaba's #4 doubles team of Sean Berhow and Collin Uhazie finished in third place.

"Dave Fix and Jake Eastin provided some excitement today," Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen said. "In their semifinal match against West Iron, they were down 5-0 at one point, and won six straight games to force a tiebreaker to win the set and the match."

Hansen was not surprised to see Kingsford win the title, but...

"Kingsford has a pretty good team, the rest is wide open," Hansen said. "We knew that going in, and we didn't execute. Nearly everything that could've gone wrong today went wrong. It's something we addressed after the meet and will improve upon before our next match."

Jake and Dave are GNC Champs.
While Fix and Eastin were the Eskymos' only finalists, Hansen says some of his other guys were closer than the standings indicate.

"We had some really good tennis and some really heartbreaking tennis today," Hansen said. "We lost four matches today by a combined eight games. That was the difference between us taking second overall and us taking fifth overall."

"There were three, three-set tie breakers that we lost in various flights. Some due to inexperience, some due to forced errors, some just plain unlucky."

"We're a better team than we finished today and we have to show that at U.P.'s."

MID PENINSULA TENNIS FINALS: The Negaunee Miners won the conference championship, finishing with 39 points. Iron Mountain was second with 29. The Ishpeming Hematites took third place with 19 points.
