East All-Stars Hold Off West To Win UP Title, 19-13

MARQUETTE---The Upper Peninsula High School Football All-Star game went right down to the wire on Saturday, before the East team held on to beat the West, 19-13, at the Northern Michigan University Superior Dome.

The East team included Escanaba Eskymos David Falish, David Fix, and Casey DeShambo (pictured above with Eskymo classmates). And Gladstone's Steve Strom was on that winning team, which jumped to a 19-0 lead and then held on at the end.

The East scored first on a touchdown pass from Negaunee's Tanner Uren to Sault Ste. Marie's Tyler Root. Then, the longest play of the game, as Falish hooked up with the Soo's Ray'Shon Anderson for a 95-yard catch-and-run. It was 12-0 at halftime.

The East lead grew to 19-0 as Westwood's Zack Rankinen broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run and Ishpeming's Eric Dompierre made the extra point.

But the West, coached by longtime North Dickinson skipper Joe Reddinger, mounted a big comeback. First, Bessemer's Eric Lane passed to Norway's John Grayvold, Jr., for a touchdown. Then, North Dickinson's Kenny Pekarek hooked up with Menominee's Jared Rivard for a 45-yard touchdown strike. All of a sudden, it was 19-13.

And the West threatened to either tie or win it in the final minute of the game, but an interception by St. Ignace's Curtis St. Louis sealed the win for the East.

The game wrapped up a full week of activities for the boys, who stayed in Northern Michigan University dorms, took part in skills competitions, and did community service projects...including one to the Bay Cliff Health Camp in Big Bay.
