The Michigan High School Athletic Association individual regional wrestling tournaments were held on Saturday across the state, and guys from across the Upper Peninsula had to head downstate. In all, 28 UP wrestlers qualified for the state tournament by qualifying in the top four in their weight classes, and six of them won regional championships. The Gladstone Braves held the Escanaba Eskymos to no baskets and only one total point over the last part of the third and all of the fourth quarters, and the Braves rallied for a 56-52 victory over the Eskymos Friday night. The Negaunee High School wrestling team won a Division Three district championship Wednesday night at Kingsford High School, marking just the second time in school history and the first time since 1991. The Miners eeked out a 42-41 win over the host Flivvers, and after Menominee took down Westwood, 39-30, in the other semifinal, Negaunee faced Menominee in the championship. The Michigan High School Athletic Association on Tuesday announced more opportunities for high school students to enter into “Name and Likeness” agreements, although it won't be a free-for-all like it is right now in college sports. The high school model will allow students to do appearances or social media promotions, for money, but there are strict guidelines, according to Escanaba Athletic Director Nate Zaremba. The latest match-up between the Menominee Maroons and Marinette Marines boys basketball teams Saturday night went the same way most recent M&M games have gone: into the Menominee win column. The Maroons won their tenth straight game, beating the Marines for the second time this season, 92-67. Tanner Theurkauf led the Maroons with 23 points, all but one of them in the second half. Kaden Ducane had 20 points ane eight rebounds for the Marines. Menominee improved to 10-1 on the season while Marinette fell to 4-11.
The Marinette High School boys basketball team came up short Thursday night against the Freedom Irish, falling, 80-44, in Marinette. Connor Eastman led the Marines again with 13 points. Donovan Davis had a double-double of 14 points and ten rebounds for Freedom. Marinette fell to 4-10 on the season.
