It was Marquette County 2, Delta County 0, in high school tennis on Tuesday.

The Marquette Redmen and Negaunee Miners both traveled south and returned home with victories. The Redmen beat the Escanaba Eskymos, 7-1, while across the bay, the Miners swept the Gladstone Braves, 8-0.
 

MARQUETTE 7, ESCANABA 1---The Eskymos managed to get one win: at #4 doubles, as the team of Kyle Pinozek and Nate Belanger won a three-set marathon over the Marquette team on Mike Misna and Noah Gannon, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

The #3 doubles team of Carter Murray and Hunter Bradford also had a marathon, losing to Marquette's Kyle King and Mike Edwards, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.

Eskymo Coach Jim Hansen liked what he saw, despite the loss.

"The word improvement still fits this meet," Hansen said.  "We lost 8-0 to Marquette last time  we played. We got better there and also won more games than we did last time."

" We still played very good tennis," Hansen continued. "Our 3 and 4 doubles teams battled hard all day. It was fun to watch. Our 1 and 2 doubles are making strides.

"We're still in a good place going into GNC's."

NEGAUNEE 8, GLADSTONE 0---The Negaunee Miners showed why they are considered the best team in the Upper Peninsula by rolling over the Gladstone Braves, 8-0, Tuesday at Pfotenhauer Park. The Miners won in straight sets in all eight flights, although the Braves did battle hard at #3 singles and #1 doubles.

Gladstone's Dan Williams lost, 6-4, 6-0.

Negaunee's Kevin Price topped Gladstone's Neal Sabin, 6-4, 7-5, at #3 singles. But Gladstone Coach Rich Trombly was happy with Sabin's performance.

"That was the match of the day," Trombly said. "Both players were pounding the ball. It is one of the best #3 singles matches I have seen."

Gladstone's #1 doubles team of Bryce Wolf and Cody Frazer hit well against Negaunee's Nick Kill and Lucas Christiansen. But the Miners prevailed, 7-5, 7-6.

"Negaunee has a very good team," Trombly said. "But we had some very good matches."
