ORANGE CRUSH: Esky Softball Rolls In Wisconsin
MAUSTON, Wis.---Expectations are high for the Escanaba High School girls softball team, and so far, the Eskymos have not disappointed. The girls opened the 2017 season with three easy wins this weekend at the Wisconsin Dells High School Challenge. On Friday, Escanaba blasted Hayward, Wis., 21-0. Then on Saturday, the Eskymos blanked Menomonie, Wis., 11-0, and then topped McFarland, Wis., 13-1, to finish the event. Make that 45 runs for the Eskymos, and 1 run for everybody else. Against Hayward, senior Katie Ross pitched a no-hitter, striking out eleven batters in the five innings of work. Junior Taylor Gauthier had four hits in the victory. In Saturday's first game, the Eskymos got another no-hitter in the circle, this time from freshman pitcher Gabi Salo. Gauthier kept her hot bat going with a home run. In Saturday's second game, Escanaba's two pitchers shared duties. Ross, who will play at Ferris State University next year, threw the first three innings and allowed one run on three hits. Salo tossed the final two innings as the Eskymos won by the mercy rule. Escanaba enters the season ranked No. 2 in Michigan in Division Two, after advancing to the state semifinals last spring. While these games weren't much of a challenge for the Eskymos, next weekend's games promise to be. Escanaba will travel to Saginaw next Saturday for a tripleheader against Saginaw Swan Valley (#3 in Division Two), Midland (#1 in Division One) and Lake Fenton. |
