MAT HONORS: UP Wrestlers Recognized All-State

Some Upper Peninsula High School wrestlers are being honored for their success on the mat this winter. The Michigan Wrestling Association lists its All-State teams by grade level and by division. There are six Upper Peninsula wresters from Division Four who are being honored, and two from Division Three.

The only U.P. wrestler to be honored across all divisions is freshman Drew Allgeyer of North Central High School, who wrestles on the Bark River-Harris team under the co-op.

Allgeyer was named the top freshman 145-pounder for the entire state, regardless of class. He finished seventh at the MHSAA state finals at Detroit’s Ford Field. He compiled a 44-12 record this season, including 3-2 at States.

In Division Three, two U.P. wrestlers were honored as the top in their respective weight class for their grade level.

Gladstone’s Cole Hansen was pegged as the top 152-pound senior in Division Three. He finished third in the state at Ford Field, winning five of the six matches he competed in. Hansen finished his senior season with a record of49-6.

Kingsford’s Toby Wilcox was named D3’s top 145-pound sophomore. He lost two of his three matches at Ford Field, but had a strong over record of 36-12 this season.

In Division Four, besides Allgeyer, five other U.P. wrestlers were honored in their respective weight classes for their respective grade levels.

Gwinn Model Towner Xander Luoma was the top D4 130-pound freshman, and despite losing both matches in Detroit, he was 36-9 this season.

Two Iron Mountain freshmen were also honored as top D-4 wrestlers: 112-pounder Shawn McGuire and 171-pounder Bradon Farragh.

McGuire had an outstanding freshman season for the Mountaineers, advancing all the way to the state championship match before being pinned by a wrestler from downstate powerhouse Hudson High School. McGuire finished with a 44-3 overall record.

Farragh did not qualify for the state finals, and finished with a 29-18 season record.
A third Mountaineer, Parker Stroud, was honored as the state’s top D-4 sophomore 125-pounder. He finished eighth at the state finals in Detroit and had a final record of 29-10.

And Rudyard High School’s Bradley Hall was named the state’s top D-4 junior 103-pounder. He finished fourth in the state at the MHSAA Finals, winning three of his five matches. Hall won 41 matches this season, losing only five.
