The Bark River-Harris Broncos volleyball team cruised to two easy victories and then had to rally at the end to pull out a 3-2 win over the Rapid River Rockets Thursday night in Bark River. The Menominee Maroons snapped a 1-1 tie with two dominating sets and beat the Escanaba Eskymos, 3-1, Tuesday night in Escanaba. After the Eskymos had tied the match with a 25-22 win in the second set, the Maroons cruised to 25-11 and 25-12 wins to take the match. The start of the high school hockey season is still two months away.
But an early look at the Escanaba Eskymos' 2012-13 schedule shows that the team will have the chance to bring back a lot of hardware during the campaign, competing in five in-season tournaments. Two of the tournaments will be at home.

The Escanaba High School football team appeared to have the game won against the Medford Raiders Friday night in Wisconsin. The Eskymos had a five-point lead, and they had the ball, looking to run out the clock. But an ill-advised pass led to two minutes from hell, and the Eskymos lost to the Raiders, 44-35. The Rapid River Rockets gave up 40 points in their football game against the Engadine Eagles on Homecoming Friday night. That usually means a loss. But the Rockets scored 60 points on offense and beat the Eagles, 60-40. Jake Pearson scored six touchdowns...three in the air and three on the ground...as the Rockets improved to 5-0.
The Gladstone High School girls volleyball team played well in stretches Thursday night, but left the court with nothing to show for it. The Rapid River Rockets got off to a good start Thursday night, racing to a 20-14 lead in their first volleyball game against the North Dickinson Nordics.

The newest Upper Peninsula high school baseball program is already gearing up for the 2013 campaign. Gladstone High School will have baseball for the first time next spring, as a self-funded sport. The Escanaba Eskymos shocked the Marquette Redmen, 31-22, in a Great Northern Conference match-up Friday night in Marquette. David Falish scored three touchdowns on the ground and tossed a touchdown pass to lead the Eskymos.
Escanaba entered the game on a two-game skid, but scored 22 points in the first half and then the defense shut out the Redmen in the second half.

The Escanaba High School cross-country teams competed Saturday in the 56th Annual Smiley Invitational. The girls competed in Division One Small School bracker, and placed fifth as a team, with Aimee Giese finishing eighth with a time of 16:20 in 4000 meters. The boys placed fourth overall. Andrew Stenberg was the top Eskymo, finishing third with a time of 17:13 in 5000 meters.
