ROUGH MORNING: Esky Girls Fall To Georgetown
JACKSON, Mich.---The Escanaba Minor Little League All-Stars (age 9-10) ran into a hot-hitting Georgetown team on Sunday as the state tournament continued in Jackson, falling 19-2, at Cascade Park. But Escanaba still advances to the state quarterfinals. Escanaba trailed just 1-0 after the first inning, but Georgetown scored 11 runs on 12 hits in the second inning. They scored seven more runs in the third inning. Claire Vanderwiele had the hardest-hit ball of the game: a booming triple over the center fielder's head to drive home two runs in the second inning. Alli Wright had three hits, four runs batted in, and scored a pair of runs. She was also the winning pitcher for Georgetown. Kaylin Reifschneider was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and two runs batted in. All nine Georgetown starters had at least one hit. Georgetown scored 22 runs in its win over Jackson Southwest on Saturday, and posted 11 runs in a win over Edwardsburg on Friday. That's 52 runs in three games. Escanaba got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Brooklyn Beauchamp led off with a walk, and after the next two girls struck out, Breleigh Reinhart smoked a long triple over the left fielder's head to bring home pinch runner Lilly VanDamme. In the end, the loss means nothing, as Escanaba advances to the quarterfinals after having won their first two games of the state tournament (10-0 over Jackson on Friday and 9-2 over Edwardsburg on Saturday). Game time on Monday is 11:00 a.m. Escanaba's opponent will be Bay County from Essexville. Monday's game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (NewsTalk 600), and on-line at www.rrnsports.com.
