Escanaba Majors Get Even At State Tournament
GLADSTONE---It may not have been the prettiest win, but Saturday's 13-4 victory over the Negaunee Little League All-Stars kept the Escanaba Major Girls' tournament hopes alive for at leats one more night. Escanaba jumped to a 7-0 lead, had a bad fourth inning to let Negaunee get closer, but then pulled away in the fifth inning to post the victory.
Hannah Edington went 4-for-4.
Escanaba scored three runs in the first inning when Hannah Edington hit a two-run single and Darby Beckon drove her home with a ground ball. Negaunee got a couple of walks from Beckon in the bottom of the inning, but could not score. Beckon would go on to retire Negaunee in order, 1-2-3, in both the second and third innings. Edington added another RBI single in the second inning to make it 4-0, then Malary Hiney ripped an RBI double in the third inning for the team's fifth run. Katie Wilson got an infield hit to bring home Sam Henderson, and Escanaba had a comfortable 6-0 lead. The lead grew to 7-0 in the fourth inning, but then came the bottom of the inning, when nothing seemed to go right for Escanaba. There were two errors, an infield base hit, and several walks, including two with the bases loaded. All of a sudden, it was 7-4.
Malary Hiney had a double and a triple.
Escanaba ended up with 14 hits, and Edington had four of them, along with five runs batted in. Negaunee managed only one infield hit, and fell to 0-2 for the tournament. Escanaba (1-1) will face South Portage at 12:00 Sunday afternoon at Howes Field in Gladstone. South Portage has outscored its opponents 32-2 in the first two games of this tournament. Sunday's game will be broadcast live on WCHT-AM (600). You can also listen to the game live via streaming audio right here at www.rrnsports.com.
