Severe Thunderstorms Postpone Junior Boys' Game
FT. WAYNE, Ind.---The Delta County Junior Boys (age 13-14) went through their warm-ups in preparation for their first Central Regional game against North Canton, Ohio, on Saturday. Twice.
Heavy rain at the field Saturday.
The game is tentatively scheduled to be made up on Monday. But the time has not been established, and in fact, tournament officials had said earlier Saturday that the game might be played only if it would effect the final standings. There are 11 teams in the tournament, from ten different states....along with the host Georgetown, Ind., All-Stars. Delta County Manager Tony Punzel thinks that his team matches up with the other teams that he has seen play so far. "We are state champs, and everyone we're going to see is in the same boat as us," Punzel said. "So we're just gonna go out there and do our best, do what we came to do, play good fundamental ball, and see what happens." It took nearly ten hours to drive from Escanaba to the Georgetown Little League Complex on Friday, and some of the boys left the hotel to get a first-hand look at the playing fields. So, what do the boys think it took to get them to this level? "Lots of hard work, practice, and effort," DC outfielder Justin Popelka said. "They (opponents) have obviously proven themselves too to win their states, and they had to work very hard too. So, we have to play our best." "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing," DC catcher Sean Bissell said. "It's gonna take good defense, good pitching, good hitting. Just gotta play Bears baseball."
