Escanaba Community Celebrates Jr. Girls' Success
ESCANABA----The girls weren't even there, but that didn't stop dozens of people from showing up at Lemmerand Park Thursday to congratulate the Junior Little League Softball team on its Central Regional Tournament championship. The girls were still in Ohio on Thursday, and prepared to fly to Seattle for the Junior Little League World Series on Saturday. But Little League International in Williamsport, Pa., called Escanaba Little League officials asking for a "community support" video. So, on just a few hours' notice, Escanaba Little League Board member Sandi Young called around and set up a hastily-arranged celebtration. And the community responded. Back in Ohio, when shown a couple of pictures from the Escanaba event, Escanaba Manager Jamie Segorski responded this way via text message. "Awesome!" Segorski wrote. "It brings a tear to my eye. What a great community!" Segorski gave his team the day off on Thursday. That meant NO PRACTICE the day after the girls won the Central Regional championship in dramatic fashion. The team moved from its Akron hotel to a different one in Cleveland on Thursday, and Segorski plans to hold a practice on Friday in the Cleveland area. The team will then fly west on Saturday, to take part in the Junior Little League World Series in Kirkland, Wash. Opening ceremonies are set for Sunday. Escanaba's first game will be Monday afternoon at 4:45 PT against Honaker, Virginia. The game will be broadcast live on WGKL-FM (105.5) and on-line at www.rrnsports.com, starting at 7:15 Eastern time. The team has set up an account at the Delta County Credit Union for any donations that you might want to make to help with the travel and other expenses to the World Series. |
